He’s a very smooth talker and networker. When we were looking to interview coaches, the consensus was that if he gets in the room, the job is his. He’s a used car salesman but that’s kind of half the battle. Relationships matter and he has a great relationship with Wade, who is a partial owner of the Jazz
Yep. Wade and Lebron got mad at us when we fired him. Lots of players were upset. People clearly like him, despite the fact that he’s clearly trash at coaching.
Who knows, maybe he’s better as an FO guy.
knicks have had some pretty bad coaches so we are kind of an expert in such matters
believe me fizdale was the worst, worse than fisher worse than rambis
he was so completely incompetent at his job, only good for being a tank commander if that's your thing
I'm sure there's a job for him in the league. He's a hell of a communicator, went out of his way to help 1-year rental players rehab their game/career with us, and always had strong locker room buy-in. You don't want him involved in designing your systems, but those are great traits for plenty of different support roles.
He was fired because the new coach was given the ability to bring in specific assistants. It happens throughout the league to good & bad assistants alike when a regime change happens. If Vogel was still HC & Lakers management fired Fiz then that would speak volumes. Fiz is a good assistant. He left a lot to be desired as a head coach though. If he’s in a front office role it will surely be related to dealing with player personnel. Not making trades or signings but being a bridge between the players & the FO. His coaching career his role was mostly as a bridge between the players & the HC.
Except the Hornets. We refused to change any of our assistants after the firing of Borrego, which helps explain why Atkinson reneged the offer (which was reportedly one of the reasons why he backed out), and it was also presumably the reason why we couldn't land D'antoni.
He’s wasn’t a good head coach for NY, but he has pedigree and the players love him. He’s very smart. It’s not like any other coach has done well with the Knicks either so maybe he’s better than shown as a head coach in NY.
He was decent in Memphis but that team, especially Gasol was aging, and it’s hard to deal with aging superstars who have slowed down.
I don't get it. His tenure with the knicks is crappy af, he doesn't even show flashes of what he could be/ talents. What ever tf in this world does the Jazz sees in him that my nephew brain couldn't comprehend.
Not a fan of fizdale but being a terrible coach doesn’t mean he can’t excel at a front office position. With his personality and charm he might be more of a fit there than on the sidelines
So you mean the Jazz are getting him to hold onto their star players? From a short term stand point it doesn't look good considering how the Jazz team is definitely not contending right now. I can see him being worth it in the long run but that means breaking up the core of this team for picks and players
I mean he could be a spokesperson or something lol or even something in player relations or marketing , doesn’t have to mean anything really in the short term
The last 20 years have featured 3 "successful" Knick coaches.
D'Antoni, black Mr. Potato Head (Mike Woodson) and Thibs. And by successful, I mean 1 2nd round exit and 2 first round exits. Using the Knicks tenure on David Fizdale is unfair.
And Fiz took us to the lowest win % of any of those coaches which says a lot too given the competition. 17 wins first season, tied lowest in franchise history, then 4-18 next season. While Thibs somehow took nearly the exact same roster to the 4th seed
Years ago, Bill Simmons wrote a column detailing a fictional (we think!) event called the Atrocious GM Summit.
https://www.espn.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060224
While I think most GMs are *less bad* than they were back then, some teams are still very poorly run.
My theory is that these owners, who are hugely successful in the fields that made them wealthy, overestimate their competence in a completely different field. They assume that because they're so smart, and basketball is not nearly as intellectually rigorous as *field where they became billionaires here*, they are going to just be good at understanding it and making decisions around it.
That goes from meddling with basketball ops to hiring the key people.
A lot of evaluation winds up being results-based, rather than process-based. Was our process right? What did we miss? Among the hundreds of moves we didn't make but wanted to make, how many were good ideas? Among the moves we didn't make for good reasons on our end (guys we didn't pick, guys we didn't sign, etc), how many were correct calls *for the correct reason?*
It's why I think Hinkie remains an underrated guy.
I don’t see this as too bad. It’s a front office position. Maybe all he is going to do is player relations crap which he is good at. I wouldn’t trust him on much else though.
'Take that for data' front office
Watch him confront the entire analytics department with that corny ass catchphrase
Sends a pic of Gobert to Brad Stevens. “Take that for Tatum?”
Take note......for data

Arrested Player Development will return on BR.
Idk Steve Kerr was a trash ass executive and is a great coach. Maybe the reverse will be true with Fizdale????
yeah but kerr was an executive for robert sarver who continually refused to pay any money to keep the suns good players
And Fizdale was a coach for the Knicks so they both had an impossible job Eyoooo
thibs came in and made the playoffs with literally the same roster as fizdale had difference of like 30 wins
Yes but my joke tho
knicks have had some pretty bad coaches so we are kind of an expert in such matters believe me fizdale was the worst, worse than fisher worse than rambis he was so completely incompetent at his job, only good for being a tank commander if that's your thing

I think us firing him after a year of being an ASSISTANT should be more proof as well. He’s simply not that good

New head man wanted his own staff. That’s par for the course. A lot of them were fired, not just him.
He wasn't fired for incompetency. He was fired to clean house.
Prob just well connected and has good personal skills
Maybe teams just wanna bang his wife
I think the connection is Wade being a part owner of the Jazz. Fizdale was the long-time assistant coach with the Heat.
This is a favor from d.wade
his wife maybe?
Didnt know mourinho was interested in basketball
He was a bad head coach for the Grizz too.
Remember when people said that about Jason Kidd and now everyone was singing his praises this year lol
He’s wasn’t a good head coach for NY, but he has pedigree and the players love him. He’s very smart. Thibs with nearly the exact same roster took the team to the 4th seed, while Fiz went 4-18 to start the previous season
No, he really wasn't. Ask Grizzlies fans how they feel about him.
That team was on its way to being broken up. It was over. No coach could have turned back the hands of time and no coach did after him.
He was shit in Memphis.
Please, no
You never know tbf. Everyone was memeing Jason Kidd last year and he did a great job at Dallas.
Im sorry bro
Jazz I know we had our differences but I wouldn’t want you guys to suffer with him. He didn’t even last past a year with us.
Maybe they’re just bringing him in to constantly tell Donovan how much he hates the Knicks to convince him to stay.
So you mean the Jazz are getting him to hold onto their star players? From a short term stand point it doesn't look good considering how the Jazz team is definitely not contending right now. I can see him being worth it in the long run but that means breaking up the core of this team for picks and players
Hard to say , front office position is so vague lol
That's why I don't get it lol, he is not a winning guy nor are they planning on a rebuilt this is truly confusing
I mean he could be a spokesperson or something lol or even something in player relations or marketing , doesn’t have to mean anything really in the short term

He was shit on the Grizz too. Worst coach I've ever seen here. Give me JB Bickerstaff or Lionel Hollins any day of the week.
Nephew brain is too young to remember fizdale was a very good assistant prior to the Knicks.
He was? I know he was an assistant coach before but I haven't seen anyone giving him praises
Failing upwards.
Let's go
LMFAO
Bruh lol
He's definitely gonna be taking some data now
My condolences for SLC
This guy must be super lovable cuz he is always hired
Being friends with lebron and dwade takes you a looonnggggg way.
Good lord please don’t do it Utah. You don’t want this clown
why the hell are so many teams making awful coaching decisions all of a sudden? masochism?

It’s a front office position, who cares
I don’t see this as too bad. It’s a front office position. Maybe all he is going to do is player relations crap which he is good at. I wouldn’t trust him on much else though.
You can see the slow decline of that franchise when it was sold to the new owners.
Utah making the right move 😏😂
Take that for data
nyc to slc seems like a pretty big change in scene
Massive upgrade, really.
Probably never left his Miami residence.
Oof
Have fun jazz.
Gonna be hard to get a front office role if you don’t trust data
Why does this guy even have a job
I guess they're not gonna get rooked anymore.
Reminds me of when the Knicks hired him to please KP and him going to Latvia to see him
He can't keep getting away with all this!!!!!!!
Don’t do it
I support anything that potentially leads to more pictures of his wife being posted. She is a fucking smokeshow.
I like it
Not like this
This guy is the coronavirus variant of coaching
In Smith, Wade, and Ainge we trust…. Right?
